༄༅། །བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་མ་ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པའི་སྙིང་པོ། །
Introduction
The Heart Sutra as recited in Tibet conveys the same teaching as the version familiar in Japan, translated by Xuanzang (beginning "観自在菩薩 行深般若波羅蜜多時…"). However, what has come down in Tibet is the long form, known as the "extended version," which includes an opening that sets the scene in which the teaching was given, as well as a concluding section.
On this page, the Tibetan text is accompanied by its pronunciation (in Japanese katakana) and an English rendering of its meaning. Passages that overlap with Xuanzang's version are marked in vermilion, with the corresponding phrase from Xuanzang's version shown. Passages without a mark are not found in Xuanzang's version.

|---|---|---|

| Opening | "Thus I have heard." It begins with the Blessed One absorbed in samādhi on Vulture Peak at Rājagṛha | It begins with "観自在菩薩 行深般若波羅蜜多時" |
| Manner of telling | A dialogue: Śāriputra asks and Avalokiteśvara answers | Avalokiteśvara addresses Śāriputra (Sharishi) |
| "Relieved all suffering" (度一切苦厄) | This phrase is not present | It reads "照見五蘊皆空 度一切苦厄" |
| Form and emptiness | In the order: "Form is emptiness. Emptiness itself is form. There is no emptiness apart from form, and no form apart from emptiness" | In the order: "色不異空 空不異色 色即是空 空即是色" |
| Mantra | "Tadyathā Oṃ gate gate pāragate…" It is preceded by "Tadyathā Oṃ" | "羯諦羯諦 波羅羯諦……(gyatei gyatei haragyatei…)" |
| Ending | The Blessed One rises from samādhi, praises Avalokiteśvara with "Well said," and all rejoice | After the mantra, it ends with the words "般若心経" |
When Reciting
The readings are written in Japanese katakana based on standard Tibetan pronunciation (the Lhasa pronunciation). Pronunciation may differ by region and tradition, including in Bhutan. At Dharma services and the like, please follow the way the lead teacher recites. Small spaces are placed between words, and larger spaces between phrases.
